In March, I saw an article about a young gay black couple
who got married on January 18. They were both 19 at the time and their wedding
was featured on My Teenage Wedding. I
haven’t seen the show so I don’t know what channel it was on, but the article
did provide the following clip:
The show’s description read: David and Tre'Darrius, both 19, are young, black, and gay, and getting married
in not-so-progressive Memphis. But the odds are stacked against them. Once very
popular, David's friends ostracized him after he came out in high school.
Neither mother is responding to the wedding invite. And their only adult
supporter, Tre's uncle Theo, thinks they're too young to marry ...
Though David and Tre’Darrius reminded me of Keith and D
(Bump This), I felt conflicted about the wedding. The logical part of me agreed with the uncle,
but the hopeless romantic in me was pulling for them. I love hearing stories about
couples who fell in love as teenagers and are still in love forty years later. Something
about those stories confirms the power and the strength of love and gives
credence to the Disney idea of true love. I haven’t tried to find out how they
are doing as a couple, but I truly hope they are doing well and I wish them
luck.
